A World of Opportunity

Leticia leads by example in Canberra

Year 12 student Leticia Vincent was in Canberra this month representing Kormilda College and the Darwin region at the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation’s Work Experience in Government Program (WEX). She was accompanied by Melanie Mununggurr, Director of Kormilda’s Strong Girls program.

WEX aims to provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in Years 11 and 12 with hands on experience and information about job opportunities and career pathways in the Australian Government. It also includes cultural mentoring and leadership guidance for participants.

WEX activities include:

  • Meeting senior government Ministers and parliamentarians
  • Visits to the Department of Defence and the Australian Federal Police headquarters
  • Visits to national institutions such as Questacon, the Australian War Memorial, and the Australian Institute of Sport
  • A tour of Parliament House
  • A careers expo, where students can talk to representatives from a range of government agencies
  • A workshop on applying for jobs in the Australian Public Service
